ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM (A VALENTINE POEM)

The Elephant in the room sits still

Staring at me stare at you

My eyes on you; yours on your phone

This time last year, we were entangled like locks

We started with the cupcakes but ended up…

Let’s just say we made a mess — a good one.

But, these days, you retreat

Like snail to oil

Like wax to fire

Like a coward…

The Elephant in the room weeps

Our pet

Our comfort animal

His collar spells a name

“Resentment”.

Big ears that never listen

Two tusks with which we stab each other’s backs

Thick skins that keep us coming back for more

And my big trunk that doesn’t stand for you…

Not anymore.

The Elephant in the room wins.

Tired of going halfway — then some more just to reach you

Its never me

Its never you

We never bend for each other

At least not during arguments.

We just sit in a circle around the fire

Waiting for time to run out

Cos, we’re too scared to leave.

So we sit…

Two jokers and a pet
